Fishing that follows the conditions

South Canterbury fishing rewards flexibility. River levels, wind and weather can change quickly, so I do not lock every trip to one piece of water months in advance.

We’ll plan around your experience and what you want from the trip, then I’ll make the final call based on the conditions. That could mean a day on the Rangitata, a smaller river closer to Timaru, high country water or a backcountry option when the timing is right.

The aim is simple: a safe, well run day and the best fishing available.

Meet your guide

I’m Daniel, a South Canterbury fly fishing guide with more than 15 years spent fishing the rivers and lakes of this region.

Most of my guiding is with one or two anglers. It gives us room to move at the right pace, change the plan when needed and spend proper time on the fishing.

I’m happy teaching someone on their first day with a fly rod or working through the details with an experienced angler. My guiding style is calm, practical and based on clear communication.

Local knowledge matters, but so does how the day is run. You can expect a clear plan before we leave, honest calls when the conditions change and a trip shaped around what you want to get from it.

A large braided river with changing channels, long runs and plenty of water to cover. Fishing here can involve a full day on foot and suits anglers comfortable with a more active day.

What to expect on the day

A standard guided fishing day includes:

  • Private guiding for one or two anglers
  • Transport from the agreed meeting point
  • Rods and reels if required
  • Flies and terminal tackle
  • Lunch, water and hot drinks
  • Safety equipment
  • Photos from the day where possible

Before the trip, you’ll receive a clear meeting time, equipment list and any other information you need.

Fishing licences, accommodation and specialist access costs are not included unless confirmed in your itinerary.

What you’ll need

Bring clothing for changing weather, a warm layer, waterproof jacket, sun protection and any fishing equipment you prefer to use.

Waders, boots, rods and reels can be provided if arranged in advance.

A complete packing list will be sent before your trip, so you will know what to bring and what can be supplied.

Planning your trip from overseas

Most international guests arrive through Christchurch. From there, you can travel south towards Timaru or include the fishing as part of a wider South Island itinerary.

If fishing is a key part of your trip, allow more than one day if you can. It gives us more room to work around weather and river conditions.

The main South Canterbury fishing season

Many South Canterbury rivers are open from spring through autumn, but exact dates and regulations vary between waters.

Spring

October and November

River conditions can change quickly through spring. This is a time when local knowledge and flexibility are particularly useful.

Summer

December to February

Long days provide more time on the water and access to a wider range of fishing. Warm weather, wind and visitor numbers can all influence the plan.

Autumn

March and April

Cooler mornings and changing conditions can make autumn an excellent time to fish. Some waters close earlier than others, so the itinerary must follow current regulations.

Winter

May to September

Many rivers are closed or have limited winter sections. Fishing options are more restricted and depend on the water and current regulations. This is also a good time to plan a spring or summer trip.
